Dealing With Pests This Summer

news shield

We’re all too aware that certain pest issues arise during the warmer months of the year and this can cause our homes, gardens and workplaces to be infested with unwanted bugs and flying insects.

Often just removing an infestation or bettling to rid your home or garden of insects can leave you with a perpetual issue throughout the summer, without dealing with the problem fully. We have put together a list of the top 5 most common summer pests and the most effective ways to manage them whether that is around a residential or commercial property.

Wasps & Bees

With 9 different species of wasps in the UK it’s no wonder they can cause an issue during the warmer months of the year. Typically active from May to November, they tend to enter and leave nests that have been found in walls, roofs and even holes in the ground which is why we tend to find them close to homes and properties. Naturally more prone to stinging than bees, wasps can cause a serious nuisance which is why it is important to contact us if you discover a wasps nest near your home.

Both bees and wasps can be attracted to human foods left in your bins or on a sunny picnic day in the garden which is why they are both likely to be spotted at some point near your property. Spotting one or two in your home is probably not a good indication of a nest close by however, if you start to spot more at the same time then it’s best to contact us as soon as possible to inspect for a nearby nest.

Ants

It often feels like ants seem to spring up from nowhere. Smarter than they’re given credit for, ants often send one out to find food sources before sending out more to collect resources. This is often why you will see possibly hundreds heading for the same place which is of course not ideal when it’s in your home.

Being small and quite fast they tend to enter your home through a small hole or crack in a wall or fitting. Whilst ants aren’t a risk to human health they can cause a nuisance especially in large numbers and you certainly don’t want them crawling over your counters or food!

Cockroaches

pest control Brighton

Synonymous with pest control, cockroaches are probably one of the most hated pests by people. Although these creatures are found all year round they are much more prevalent during the warmer weather and the summer months. This is due to them breeding during the warmer weather and so their numbers increase. With more seeking food and shelter you may just find them dwelling in your home or in commercial properties.

Being mainly nocturnal, cockroaches can be difficult to spot so it’s best to identify typical signs of their presence. This could be strange smears or smells, droppings and sometimes shed skins.

Flies

Flies can be found all year round but like most insects they tend to breed during the warmer months which is why you will often find them in mass during the summer. All vying for a food source, human foods become a prime source for them.

As we tend to keep doors and windows open during the summer it’s all too common to find them flying around your home. With many different types of fly in the UK from fruit flies to horse flies and the common house fly, they all have one fundamental thing in common. They are all very unhygienic, this is why if you believe you may have a fly infestation in your home or commercial property then contact us as soon as possible.

Preventing Summer Pest Problems In Your Property & Garden

Seal Food Properly

When you’re not eating, make sure to seal your food up in containers or in the fridge to cut the food supply of any insects that find themselves in your property. As we’ve mentioned, many types of insects send scouts out first to identify a food source. If they come back empty-handed, the likelihood is they’ll move on.

Crumbs and food waste can also cause an issue so try to keep your bins sealed if possible thereby preventing them from finding a source close to your building.

Try Planting Plants That Help

Certain plants attract insects more than others, whilst this might be beneficial for some species such as bees, unnecessary for pollinating and our ecosystem, other bugs and insects might not be as welcomed. If you’re an avid gardener try looking for plants that repel insects in areas you don’t want them.

Change Or Remove Any Standing Water

As much as water fountains, birdbaths and water features look amazing in our gardens, if the water is left too long without being changed, insects can use them as the ideal breeding grounds. Many insects are drawn to water and damp environments so it’s beneficial to change the water regularly.

Use Different Smells Around Your Home

Citrus and other smells are known to repel certain insects such as mosquitos and other smells work very well too. This can be a refreshing way of avoiding pests coming into your home this summer. However, this typically works for the occasional insect and likely won’t be effective against an infestation.
